Excitement is building—and preparations are gaining momentum: on April 29 and 30, a key milestone was reached with the official site visit for the 2026 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. When the world’s best young rowers compete at the Duisburg regatta course from July 23 to 26, every detail must be perfectly in place—and that’s exactly what was intensively worked on during these two days.
The Organizing Committee, led by Tobias Weysters and Thomas Küpper, welcomed high-level representatives of World Rowing: Christine Jacobsen, Kirsten Meisner, and Ralf Hoffmann from Swiss Timing. Together, they reviewed and refined all aspects of the current planning status in detail.
The discussions covered all key areas of a world-class event: from the overall schedule—including venue opening hours, training slots, and athlete services—to a comprehensive review of the infrastructure. Critical elements such as the finish tower, the regatta building, boat storage areas, the start system, and intermediate timing points were thoroughly assessed. Topics like volunteer and NTO requirements, team logistics—including airport and hotel shuttles, accommodation, catering, accreditation—and team tent planning were also further developed.
A particular highlight of the visit was the tour of the newly built regatta building, including the integrated finish tower. The modern facility impressed not only with its functionality but also emphasized Duisburg’s ambition to deliver optimal conditions for international elite sport. Together with World Rowing, the group explored what will become the operational heart of the championships—where, in summer 2026, fractions of a second will decide medals.
In addition, broader organizational topics such as budget planning, safety and security concepts, and marketing and communication strategies were addressed. Plans for social events—from the opening ceremony to the Nations Dinner—already underline that Duisburg aims to offer not only outstanding racing but also a memorable overall experience.
From a sporting perspective, race traffic patterns and precise timing systems were key points of discussion—both essential to ensure fair and thrilling competition at the highest level.
The overall conclusion of the site visit is highly positive: preparations are well on track, collaboration with international partners is strong and constructive, and the enthusiasm for the event is clearly visible.
With each step forward, anticipation for summer 2026 continues to grow. Duisburg is ready to welcome the next generation of rowing talent—and to deliver unforgettable moments on and off the water.
